Welp, I done did it.
Took the plunge.
Made the leap.
Tied the knot.
Got hitched.
Whatever your preferred way of saying it might be, I’m now a married man.
And despite the frigid cold, and the June snow, we had an amazing time that I wouldn’t trade for the world.
But now it is time to get back to y’all, and bring more of that sweet, sweet value that you know and love.
After a one-week hiatus, I am honestly just as curious as you are to see where things have shifted in my absence.
So let’s get amongst it!
Rankings
Pro tip: click or tap the top of any given column to sort the data. You can also search for a given player using the “Search in table” box.
Players with negative numbers in the “+/-” column are “Values”, while players with positive numbers in that column are considered “Overvalues.” Lastly, if the google doc was your best friend, you can still find it right here.
Please note: based on how the pricing data is pulled, some players have blanks in their +/-. This will improve over time as more and more cards continue to hit the market for each player and more data flows to the provider.
10 Value Candidates
At this point in the season, there are way too many deep, deep-value candidates to list in this write-up, I encourage you to check out either the full list above and filter from A → Z, or do the same in the google sheet. Be patient though, many of these guys are hurt or have had poor first half. If they were on fire, they generally wouldn’t show up here.
Brandon Woodruff - MIL - SP
SoRank: 40 | Implied Rank: 177 | -137 slot differential
Woodruff, now there is a name I’ve not heard in years. His value is super low right now with managers looking for healthy pitchers to start, but it’s not like he is getting further from healthy at this point. This is a great entry point for a borderline ace.
Bryan Reynolds - PIT - OF
SoRank: 48 | Implied Rank: 124 | -76 slot differential
Another injury buy-low, but this time Reynolds could be back within the next week or two. He’s awesome when on the field. Nuff said.
Tim Anderson - CWS - SS
SoRank: 60 | Implied Rank: 243 | -183 slot differential
Anderson is back, and more discounted than ever. At this point, you just need him to return to 75% of his usual self and you are still winning.
J.T. Realmuto - PHI - C
SoRank: 68 | Implied Rank: 240 | -172 slot differential
I don’t even really like catchers in Sorare, but this has gone too far. He is fantastic at the plate, and earns almost full-time work between C and DH. There are far, far worse ways to fill MI that cost far more than J.T.
Riley Greene - DET - OF
SoRank: 87 | Implied Rank: 177 | -90 slot differential
Just a fantastic young talent at a sweet injury discount.
Justin Verlander - NYM - SP
SoRank: 91 | Implied Rank: 194 | -103 slot differential
WHAAAATTT. I know what you are thinking… “Nick hates the old players.” And normally I dock them in my ranks quite a bit. That’s why Verlander sits just inside the top 100. But boy, a mediocre start to the season has him looking like a screamin’ value. If you are a manager that only plays for this year, check out Verlander.
Nick Lodolo - CIN - SP
SoRank: 101 | Implied Rank: 224 | -123 slot differential
The opposite of Verlander, Lodolo was one of everyone’s favorite breakouts coming into the season. He’s still young (25), still rocking a high K% (28.3%), and can now be had for a steep discount.
Seiya Suzuki - CHC - OF
SoRank: 106 | Implied Rank: 270 | -164 slot differential
Man, that’s nice.
Ryan Mountcastle - BAL - 1B/DH
SoRank: 107 | Implied Rank: 262 | -155 slot differential
Injury buy-low for a young piece of the BAL offense, don’t mind if I do!
C.J. Cron - COL - 1B/DH
SoRank: 136 | Implied Rank: 217 | -81 slot differential
Back spasms have derailed much of his season, but I am old enough to remember a few stunning 3+ homer weeks in the early part of this year. He’s got the power to swing Game Weeks, and a lovely home park.
10 Overvalued Candidates
The hot start magic dust remains on some interesting players I’d be considering parting ways with in the weeks to come.
Christopher Morel - CHC - 2B/3B/SS/OF
SoRank: 134 | Implied Rank: 58 | 76 slot differential
The hottest player on the planet has come (somewhat) back down to earth. He’s proven he’s quite good, but whether he can sustain this 149 wRC+ remains to be seen, and while I am not sure he comes crashing down to his projections, I’m also not sure he is what we’ve seen so far.
Ketel Marte - ARI - 2B/DH
SoRank: 135 | Implied Rank: 48 | 87 slot differential
Ketel is a player who has been on the value list before, but now finds himself in the midst of a value boom. I like the guy, he’s young and talented, but I’d consider selling now, and buying back in later.
Nolan Gorman - STL - 2B/DH
SoRank: 169 | Implied Rank: 71 | 98 slot differential
Ah yes, the other hottest player on the planet for a moment in time. We’ve gone over Gorman here, he’s another one where it seems managers are expecting his hot start to continue in perpetuity. I’m just… not.
Cody Bellinger - CHC - OF
SoRank: 171 | Implied Rank: 56 | 115 slot differential
Wow, that price tho. Another return candidate here, I’d rather have his teammate Suzuki, who comes at a far lower cost to aquire.
Jacob deGrom - TEX - SP
SoRank: 183 | Implied Rank: 75 | 108 slot differential
deGrom continues to make this list, since we won’t see him pitch for the next year-plus, and yet his price has only fallen to just inside the top 100. This is still a perfectly fine exit point in my opinion.
Jorge Soler - MIA - OF/DH
SoRank: 254 | Implied Rank: 45 | 209 slot differential
Maybe he’s figured it out and finally capitalized on the power we all knew was there. Or maybe this is a hot streak. Either way, buying in now is essentially committing to a full blown breakout, everything else is a dissapointment.
Alexis Diaz - CIN - RP
SoRank: 269 | Implied Rank: 61 | 208 slot differential
This is not a knock on Diaz’ talent, he’s been electric, and has benefitted from a surprisingly hot Reds squad. But saves are streaky, and now his valuation is rivaling that of the top closers in the game. I’d be cautious.
Lane Thomas - WSH - OF
SoRank: 284 | Implied Rank: 110 | 174 slot differential
As Vlad Sedler so aptly pointed out on twitter the other day, Thomas has been outperforming Julio Rodriguez in the season so far. So a hot start indeed, nevermind the fact that Julio started slow. Thomas makes for a highly appealing sell-high.
Justin Turner - BOS - 3B/DH
SoRank: 293 | Implied Rank: 161 | 132 slot differential
Turner continues to look and perform well on the season, giving a lovely sell window for managers looking to re-allocate into younger players.
Justin Steele - CHC - SP
SoRank: 295.5 | Implied Rank: 93 | 202.5 slot differential
I couldn’t resist tossing him back on the list. He’s still being valued inside the top 100 players, which is relatively difficult for an SP, any SP.
That’s a wrap on the rankings, values, and overvalues for the week!
I would be deeply grateful if you could share these ranks with a friend, then (if you like) trot over to Twitter and toss me a follow.
It may sound silly, but it is huge for helping this newsletter grow 🙌
Good luck out there this week managers! Lemme see those W’s as they roll in!
