Sorare Ranks Update #15 - July 13th, 2023
All Star week brings a time to recalibrate your Sorare squads.
As is becoming tradition in our household, my wife and I sat down to watch the Home Run Derby on Monday evening.
For me, the Derby is the top event of the week, offering an epic spectacle of power mixed with fun storylines for the players.
My wife especially enjoys the stories, even going so far as to look up each participant online as they were being introduced to see colleges, hometowns, and other fun tidbits. Things she and I might never have taken the time to think of normally.
Together we deeply enjoyed hearing about the “local” boy Adley Rutchman (for us, a couple hundred miles away counts as local) as we watched him bash from both sides of the plate.
Then seeing the record breaking spectacle from the All Star week host, Julio Rodriguez.
And finally, coming full circle with Vladdy Jr. closing it out and cementing him and his pops as the first father-son pair of derby champs.
All of it reinforced one core fact, these players each have an amazing storyline. One we are more likely to dive deep on if we have the “skin in the game” of owning a copy of one of their cards.
So I ask you, who are going to be your second-half additions? Who’s stories will you learn on your road to victory this year?
For me, as always, that journey begins with the question of who I feel like the market is under, or overreacting to.
So let’s dive in.
Rankings
Pro tip: click or tap the top of any given column to sort the data. You can also search for a given player using the “Search in table” box.
Players with negative numbers in the “+/-” column are “Values”, while players with positive numbers in that column are considered “Overvalues.” Lastly, if the google doc was your best friend, you can still find it right here.
Please note: based on how the pricing data is pulled, some players have blanks in their +/-. This will improve over time as more and more cards continue to hit the market for each player and more data flows to the provider.
10 Value Candidates
Preppin’ for the second half? These deep values are for you. Each of them sports a value differential of -100 or more.
Brandon Woodruff - MIL - SP
SoRank: 40 | Implied Rank: 161 | -121 slot differential
Nearing a return from his injury and remains ace-caliber when healthy. Could be a second half star.
Tim Anderson - CWS - SS
SoRank: 61 | Implied Rank: 255 | -194 slot differential
Anderson’s value score actually increased from the last issue of this article. Well worth a speculative add at these prices.
Hunter Greene - CIN - SP
SoRank: 77 | Implied Rank: 180 | -103 slot differential
Also working his way back from injury, Greene is an electric young pitcher that should help your teams for years to come. And he’s on sale.
Tommy Edman - STL - 2B/SS
SoRank: 82 | Implied Rank: 204 | -122 slot differential
I think I said this before, but if you just wait long enough, Edman creeps his way back into value territory. While somewhat lacking in power, Edman can still accrue great points at a hard-to-fill position.
Justin Verlander - NYM - SP
SoRank: 91 | Implied Rank: 201 | -110 slot differential
Old man Verlander is back on the Value list, and I think Sorare managers are discounting how much he could help your teams on a start-to-start basis to close out this year.
Ke’Bryan Hayes - PIT - 3B
SoRank: 119 | Implied Rank: 219 | -100 slot differential
Ethersport favorite Ke’Bryan Hayes is back on the value list! It only took an injury to get there, but if you were looking for a buy window on this exciting young player, you’ve got one now.
Tyler O’Niell - STL - OF
SoRank: 125 | Implied Rank: 314 | -189 slot differential
As trade rumors swirl on O’Niell I find myself dreaming of him being traded to the Reds to augment the rest of that young roster in the power-boosting confines of Great American Ballpark. Baseball gods, please make it so.
Triston Casas - BOS - 1B
SoRank: 126 | Implied Rank: 242 | -116 slot differential
A rookie on the value list with power and patience. Giddy up.
Josh Bell - CLE - 1B/DH
SoRank: 157 | Implied Rank: 311 | -154 slot differential
Bell still brings plus power and everyday play time in a lineup that could stand to improve in the second half.
Tony Gonsolin - LAD - SP
SoRank: 181 | Implied Rank: 310 | -129 slot differential
Another young pitcher who has struggled with injuries but plays on a great team. This is a nice entry point for a talented player.
10 Overvalued Candidates
Not a ton of new faces in the Overvalue section this week, which serves as a reminder that value often serves as a lagging indicator of performance.
Anthony Santander - BAL - OF/DH
SoRank: 172 | Implied Rank: 107 | 65 slot differential
I continue to like multiple other options for the Orioles when building stacks, with Mountcastle a cheaper alternative to fill the same slot.
Reid Detmers - LAA - SP
SoRank: 167 | Implied Rank: 56 | 111 slot differential
He’s young, and seems to have solid stuff… at least the first two times through the order. But right now his profile feels incomplete to pay up for.
Jacob deGrom - TEX - SP
SoRank: 184 | Implied Rank: 67 | 117 slot differential
Nothing has changed about his injury, yet his value continues to hold relatively stable.
Hunter Brown - HOU - SP
SoRank: 206 | Implied Rank: 53 | 153 slot differential
There are a lot of very talented pitchers that cost a lot less than Hunter Brown. No knock on him, I’d just take two equivalent talents for the same price.
Alexis Diaz - CIN - RP
SoRank: 269 | Implied Rank: 79 | 190 slot differential
Riding the wave of saves and excellent stuff, Diaz has now creeped into top closer pricing. If that is what you believe he is, no worries, if not then this is a solid exit point.
Yandy Diaz - TB - 1B/3B/DH
SoRank: 276 | Implied Rank: 95 | 181 slot differential
He had a heck of a first half, I’d just look to pay top 100 player prices elsewhere. A lot can be had at this cost.
Marcell Ozuna - ATL - OF/DH
SoRank: 284 | Implied Rank: 195 | 89 slot differential
A recent power-surge has Ozuna on everyone’s mind as a way to get a piece of the Braves offense. It made sense when he was a value, now managers should consider thinking twice.
Lane Thomas - WSH - OF
SoRank: 286 | Implied Rank: 87 | 199 slot differential
Thomas has played great, but cashing in here is too good to pass up for me. I’d re-allocate into some players I believe in more long-term.
Justin Turner - BOS - 3B/DH
SoRank: 295 | Implied Rank: 137 | 158 slot differential
Sorry Justin, I’m team Casas to fill my CI slot for the next handful of years at a cheaper price.
Justin Steele - CHC - SP
SoRank: 296.5 | Implied Rank: 166 | 130.5 slot differential
He’s either a guy that just outperforms his peripherals or one that is staring down the barrel of regression. I can’t really point to why he has been good, so I’m not waiting around to find out.
One last thing, the Value+ graphic for GW 30 will post on Friday morning before y’all set your lineups.
I wanted to get it out with the newsletter but the pitching schedule as of this writing is full of holes thanks to All-Star Week.
Never fear, the graphic will be there when you need it most!
That’s a wrap on the rankings, values, and overvalues for the week!
I would be deeply grateful if you could share these ranks with a friend, then (if you like) trot over to Twitter and toss me a follow. Or Threads, if that is your jam now.
It may sound silly, but it is huge for helping this newsletter grow 🙌
Good luck out there this week managers!
Lemme see those W’s as you take down tournaments!
