Sorare Ranks Update #5 - April 27th, 2023
More finely tuned ranks, crazy values, and cautionary overvalues coming right up.
Shh… you hear that?
It is faint, but it’s there.
It’s the Sorare MLB market settling into the season.
Not slowing down, mind you, but simmering down after multiple weeks of ups, downs, rookie call-ups, injuries, and hot starts.
In advance of Game Week 8 we are beginning to see player values stabilize as the auction rate slows down.
That doesn’t mean there aren’t some overlooked values to be had, in fact it is getting less noisy to find them. Good for us, eh?
Let’s get amongst it.
Rankings
If you missed this section last week, I detailed out how I arrive at the ranks you are about to consume. You can check that out right here if knowing the process is your style.
If you’d rather get straight to putting those bad boys to use, look no further than the button below ↓
Note: Value is extremely subjective.
Therefore all this is to be taken as a guide to playing the game of Sorare better over a long time horizon, not as investment advice or as the only way for a player to succeed.
This is a tool, not a magic crystal ball.
10 Value Candidates
After calling out Eloy Jimenez last week and Tommy Edman the week before, I can safely say there are always players in this section that are just waiting for their matchup, their pitch.
The market doesn’t remember them yet, but you can.
Carlos Correa - MIN - SS
SoRank: 64 | Implied Rank: 120 | -56 slot differential
Slow start be damned, Carlos can ball out. On a surprisingly good team like the Twins, it might just take a weekend for him to catch fire and be right back in everyone’s good graces.
Devin Williams - MIL - RP
SoRank: 84 | Implied Rank: 153 | -69 slot differential
It doesn’t take long for folks to forget about one of the finest closers in the game. Save chances are weird, and the Brewers have had particularly few thus far. He’s a positive regression candidate without a doubt.
Tommy Edman - STL - MI
SoRank: 74 | Implied Rank: 151 | -77 slot differential
Yes, he’s still here. After a couple great weeks his differential has shrunk, but nowhere close what his long-term performance could be for your teams.
Ezequiel Tovar - COL - SS
SoRank: 129 | Implied Rank: 211 | -82 slot differential
He’s slumping. His batting average is in the 100’s. I get it. But he’s still a solid hitting prospect just a few weeks into his rookie season who will play half his games at Coors Field.
And he just so happens to be at home against the back half of the DBacks rotation this weekend.
Dustin May - LAD - SP
SoRank: 119 | Implied Rank: 207 | -88 slot differential
How soon we forget. It was not long ago May was everyone’s favorite SP breakout. He hasn’t flashed the expected strikeouts just yet, but patience is your friend here.
Jesse Winker - MIL - OF/DH
SoRank: 215 | Implied Rank: 306 | -91 slot differential
Can he stay healthy is the real question. He’s got all the potential in the world, and is slotting into the 3-spot of the Brewers lineup.
Tyler O’Neill - CLE - 1B/DH
SoRank: 93 | Implied Rank: 193 | -100 slot differential
Free Tyler O’Neill. I beg of you, Cardinals. Talked about him last week already, but he has monster power, and may see more playing time with Walker demoted to AAA.
Chris Sale - BOS - SP
SoRank: 167 | Implied Rank: 309 | -142 slot differential
Once an Ace, Sale has struggled to stay on the field of late. This season, he is already flashing excellent stuff, just inconsistently. It has been a while since he has pitched regularly, so I’m thinking we haven’t seen the best of him yet this season.
Trevor Rodgers - MIA - SP
SoRank: 257 | Implied Rank: 524 | -267 slot differential
Another returning character to this list, Rodgers has flashed filthy stuff in the bigs already, but is still figuring some things out. Right now, that means he can be a solid streaming starting pitcher for managers on a budget, and could develop into more.
Michael Kopech - CWS - SP
SoRank: 214 | Implied Rank: 571 | -357 slot differential
Speaking of filthy stuff. Kopech has it. In spades. He’s just still struggling with consistency. I am still a believer, and at this value, he’s well worth a flier.
10 Overvalued Candidates
I’d list Joey Gallo in this section again this week, just to ensure he would continue to rake… but he fell outside my Top 300.
My anti-Gallo mojo probably means he has a multi-dinger week incoming.
But I digress, let’s dig into the overvalues who did make the Top 300.
Brandon Marsh - PHI - OF
SoRank: 252 | Implied Rank: 123 | 129 slot differential
Hello, hot start markup.
Justin Steele - CHC - SP
SoRank: 292 | Implied Rank: 168 | 124 slot differential
Another hot start, this time at SP. Steele has flashed strong stuff and draws a great matchup this weekend against MIA, so there is reason to believe the strong start can continue a little longer.
Hunter Renfroe - LAD - 2B/3B/DH
SoRank: 197 | Implied Rank: 76 | 121 slot differential
Or Hunter Revenge-froe, as we called him on the Youtube Show the other day. Buoyed up by a hot start and some very nice matchups, Renfroe is not someone I’ll be targeting. Plenty of other long-term values in the sea.
Nico Hoerner - CHC - SS
SoRank: 153 | Implied Rank: 45 | 108 slot differential
The dude has been absolutely on fire this past week. His entire team has, and it has been a blast to watch. But this pace is unsustainable. What goes up will, in all likelihood, come back down. Or I will look foolish, and that’s fine too.
Brandon Nimmo - NYM - OF
SoRank: 180 | Implied Rank: 73 | 107 slot differential
I’m starting to wonder if my model is wrong, or if Nimmo simply offers such nice stacking value that managers are willing to pay a premium for a piece of that offense. Honestly I’m not sure, but he continues to be an overvalue list mainstay.
Jorge Soler - MIA - OF/DH
SoRank: 300 | Implied Rank: 200 | 100 slot differential
Soler has always had monster power. And it seems he is getting regular at-bats to try and manifest some of that power. I’m not sure I’m buying it, at least not to this extent.
Max Muncy - LAD - 2B/3B/DH
SoRank: 127 | Implied Rank: 52 | 75 slot differential
Insanely hot start alert.
Jhoan Duran - MIN - RP
SoRank: 165 | Implied Rank: 95 | 70 slot differential
The inverse of Devin Williams earlier, Duran has pitched great, and the Twins are playing strong baseball and giving him plenty of chances, but there is potentially some regression ahead in terms of save opportunities.
Brandon Lowe - TB - 2B/DH
SoRank: 116 | Implied Rank: 63 | 53 slot differential
After a blazing start, Lowe has cooled off in recent games, however his implied rank remains lofty. He’s likely just one of those guys that will run hot and cold during the season.
Justin Turner - BOS - 3B/DH
SoRank: 281 | Implied Rank: 242 | 39 slot differential
I like stacking BOS bats, but between Devers, Verdugo, Yoshida, and Casas I rarely even look at Turner. My ranks tend to favor youth as well, so muscling up and paying a premium for Turner isn’t my favorite play.
That’s a wrap on the rankings and 10/10 for the week!
